Will The "Original" Grill Pad® and the Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ protect the surface of my composite deck?

New composite material is coming on the market every day. We continue to test new products for compatibility with The "Original" Grill Pad® and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™, and they are compatible with many of the composite product and exotic woods we have tested. Neither of these products will stick to a composite deck surface as they contain no rubber backing material. As with any object resting in one place for extended periods, weather and exposure conditions of the area protected by The "Original" Grill Pad® and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ will differ from the surround area not protected by the Pad/Mat. Therefore, you may notice differences in appearance between the area directly under The "Original" Grill Pad® and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ and surrounding, unprotected areas upon removal of the pad. To minimize the occurrence of weathering on deck surfaces, do not allow the area beneath The "Original" Grill Pad® and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ to remain wet for extended periods. Allow all wood, composite deck product, or surface sealers and stains to cure a minimum of 30 days before placement of any deck protector.

After it rains, I've occasionally noticed there is a dark mark under my grill pad on the deck. What causes this?

The "Original" Grill Pad® is porous. It allows for water penetration through The "Original" Grill Pad® but not grease. The watermark you see should dry within days if you either remove The "Original" Grill Pad® or leave The "Original" Grill Pad® in place. Do not attempt to pressure wash or apply cleansers to this watermark. It will dry to its original surface appearance.

After it rains, I've noticed there is a watermark under my Gas Grill Splatter Mat™. What causes this?

The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ does not allow for the penetration of moisture through the product. On occasion, rain or a misdirected sprinkler system will force water between the deck boards and the Gas Grill Splatter Mat™. A watermark may occur if the pad is not removed and the surface area is left covered. Do not attempt to pressure wash or apply cleansers to this watermark. It will dry to its original surface appearance.

There are small cracks on the smooth side of my grill pad. Is this a problem?

No.
The mapping or small fissures you see on the back are a natural part of the curing process. They do not penetrate through the pad and will not cause any structural problems to the pad.

Is 24" from the deck surface to the bottom of my new chiminea enough room to protect my deck?

We recommend this height from any sustained heat source. Be sure to use the manufacturers recommended safety measures when installing a chiminea, gas or charcoal grill, fire-pit or fryer! Sustained high temperatures are to be avoided as they pose a fire hazard to surrounding areas.

Will The "Original" Grill Pad® protect my deck from the greasy mess of frying a turkey every Thanksgiving?

Yes.
Better the grease stain on The "Original" Grill Pad® than your surface area. Make sure you follow all manufacturers' instructions for fryer safety and frying locations. You should move The "Original" Grill Pad® to your driveway for frying with a propane fryer to keep the high heat and excess grease splatter away from a wood deck or patio surface. Remember that turkey fryers, fire-pits and other such appliances are to be used in accordance with original equipment manufacturers instructions and away from children and flammable surfaces.

I have a fire-pit and want to enjoy an outdoor fire on my new deck. What concerns should I have with these products and The "Original" Grill Pad®?

Follow all manufacturers' recommendations and maintain a safe distance from the bottom of the fire-pit to the deck or patio surface. Remember that fire-pits and other such appliances are to be used in accordance with original equipment manufacturers instructions and away from children and flammable surfaces.

I have seen plastic and metal "deck protectors" at grocery stores that are cheaper than your product. What is the difference in these products?

The "Original" Grill Pad® is a durable (cement based) lightweight (7 - 12 pounds) true deck and patio protector. It is recommended for use under charcoal and gas grills as well as many other outdoor appliances to protect your property. Plastic will melt under very low heat and is degraded by constant exposure to the sun. The metal protectors on the market are subject to rust. Read the small print of all manufacturers' products. The "Original" Grill Pad® is the only product on the market designed for GAS and Charcoal/wood appliances that is compatible with composite decking.

I have seen other "fabric" type deck protectors at Home Centers and other mass merchants that are cheaper for gas grills. What makes The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ a better product?

The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ is made in the USA! The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™ does not have a rubber backing that will, when exposed to the inherent heat retained in composite deck boards, melt and adhere to the deck surface. It is reversible, easy to clean and easily stored when not in use.
