What colors and sizes are available for The “Original” Grill Pad?

The “Original” Grill Pad is available in three sizes and three shapes (30″ round, 30″ x 42″ rectangle, and a 30″ x 42″ oval) to accommodate most outdoor appliances. Four colors are offered to enhance any outdoor room décor: Black, Brown, Gray and Brick Red.

Will The “Original” Grill Pad protect my deck from the greasy mess of frying a turkey every Thanksgiving?

Yes. Better the grease stain on The “Original” Grill Pad than your surface area. Make sure you follow all manufacturers’ instructions for fryer safety and frying locations. You should move The “Original” Grill Pad to your driveway for frying with a propane fryer to keep the high heat and excess grease splatter away from a wood deck or patio surface. Remember that turkey fryers, fire-pits and other such appliances are to be used in accordance with original equipment manufacturers instructions and away from children and flammable surfaces.

I have seen plastic and metal “deck protectors” at grocery stores that are cheaper than your product. What is the difference in these products?

The “Original” Grill Pad is a durable (cement based) lightweight (7 – 12 pounds) true deck and patio protector. It is recommended for use under charcoal and gas grills as well as many other outdoor appliances to protect your property. Plastic will melt under very low heat and is degraded by constant exposure to the sun. The metal protectors on the market are subject to rust. Read the small print of all manufacturers’ products. The “Original” Grill Pad is the only product on the market designed for GAS and Charcoal/wood appliances that is compatible with composite decking.

Why do I need a deck protector?

When you invest thousands of dollars in a deck or patio, you do not want a three-hundred dollar grill or a thirty-nine dollar fryer to damage this investment. Most manufacturers supply an aluminum or mild steel tray or cup to catch the grease and BBQ sauce related to grilling. However, they are not always checked to see when they need to be emptied or replaced and, in some cases, they are not even installed.

I have a fire pit and want to enjoy an outdoor fire on my new deck. What concerns should I have with these products and The “Original” Grill Pad?

Follow all manufacturers’ recommendations and maintain a safe distance from the bottom of the fire pit to the deck or patio surface. Remember that fire pits and other such appliances are to be used in accordance with original equipment manufacturers’ instructions and away from children and flammable surfaces.

New composite material is coming on the market every day. We continue to test new products for compatibility with The “Original” Grill Pad® and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat™, and they are compatible with many of the composite product and exotic woods we have tested. Neither of these products will stick to a composite deck surface as they contain no rubber backing material. As with any object resting in one place for extended periods, weather and exposure conditions of the area protected by The “Original” Grill Pad and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat will differ from the surround area not protected by the Pad/Mat. Therefore, you may notice differences in appearance between the area directly under The “Original” Grill Pad and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat and surrounding, unprotected areas upon removal of the pad. To minimize the occurrence of weathering on deck surfaces, do not allow the area beneath The “Original” Grill Pad and The Gas Grill Splatter Mat to remain wet for extended periods. Allow all wood, composite deck product, or surface sealers and stains to cure a minimum of 30 days before placement of any deck protector.

Know the Facts

The “Original” Grill Pad® has been the deck protector of choice for charcoal and gas barbecue grillers for over a decade. To date, there are no products like it on the market that offer the degree of protection. Designed for durability, and with a patented thin coat cement base, The “Original” Grill Pad® will last longer than some of the grills and deck surfaces on which it is placed.

Since its conception, many innovations and advances in manufactured deck construction material have been made. We continue to test our products independently with major manufacturers of composite decking to ensure that there are no issues associated with placing our grill pads/mats on synthetic surfaces. Our products use a base composition of either cement or polypropylene, neither of which present any chemical or adhesion issues with current manufactured decking materials.

In our FAQs section, we address several questions heard from consumers regarding the placement of protective grill mats/pads on composite decking, cedar/pressure treated wood and exotic wood. Please visit the website of your deck’s manufacturer to address cleaning and maintenance of their product.

Understand Weathering, Staining and Masking
Weathering is simply allowing a new deck (of any material or composition) to age for 30–45 days before you permanently place any outdoor appliance (grill, gas heater, fire pit, chimenea, deck furniture, etc) on the deck. This will give your new deck or recently refinished deck boards time to age (uniformly fade) to a stable look or appearance. If you are considering pressure washing and then sealing your new or older deck, follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and allow the new sealer to sink into the grain for at least 30 days.

All decks, regardless of the composition of the surface material, will typically lighten or fade to a different shade than the originally installed surface appearance. Any grill mat/pad or appliance that is placed over this surface immediately will mask the weathering process, and the area beneath these appliances will retain the original outline or appearance on the deck boards.

If you have constructed or will be constructing a deck utilizing any type of exotic wood, you should check with your supplier for instructions on maintenance.

The “Original” Grill Pad® product should not be used with Ipe wood decking!
